ARE YOU PREGNANT AND EXPERIENCING CONSTIPATION?

Constipation is a common issue during pregnancy and can be attributed to several factors related to changes in the body during this time. Here are some common reasons for constipation during pregnancy:

Hormonal Changes

Elevated levels of the hormone progesterone during pregnancy can lead to the relaxation of the smooth muscles in the digestive tract, including the intestines. This relaxation can slow down the movement of food through the digestive system, leading to constipation.

Pressure on the Intestines

As the uterus expands to accommodate the growing baby, it can exert pressure on the intestines. This pressure can contribute to sluggish bowel movements and constipation.

Iron Supplements

Many pregnant women are prescribed iron supplements to prevent or treat iron-deficiency anaemia. Iron supplements can be constipating for some individuals.

Dehydration

Pregnant women may be more prone to dehydration, which can contribute to constipation. It's important for pregnant women to stay well-hydrated for overall health and to support regular bowel movements.

Changes in Diet

Pregnancy can bring about changes in dietary habits. Some women may experience aversions to certain foods, or they may crave different types of foods that may not be as conducive to regular bowel movements.

Lack of Exercise

Reduced physical activity or exercise can contribute to constipation. Pregnancy discomfort or fatigue may lead to a more sedentary lifestyle, affecting bowel regularity.

Prenatal Vitamins

In addition to iron supplements, prenatal vitamins may also contain other ingredients that can contribute to constipation. It's important to discuss any concerns about constipation with a healthcare provider.

Fear of Straining

Some pregnant women may be hesitant to strain during bowel movements due to concerns about the effect on the baby. This fear can lead to holding back stool, contributing to constipation.
